NTSB To Determine Cause of 2014 CTA Train Accident at O’Hare

CHICAGO (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board is to determine what caused a Chicago Transit Authority train to jump the tracks and scale an escalator at O’Hare International Airport last year.

A meeting is scheduled Tuesday in Washington. The dramatic derailment happened just before 3 a.m. on March 24, 2014, at the end of the CTA’s Blue Line. More than 30 people were hurt, but none had life-threatening injuries. No one was on the usually busy escalator at the time. The accident caused more than $9 million in damage.

A preliminary NTSB report issued in April 2014 found a sensor for an automatic braking system was too close to the end of the track to prevent the crash.

The CTA fired the operator, who told investigators she dozed off before the crash.
