Chicago Man Faces 5 Years For Filing False Tax Returns

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man is sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for his part in the theft of hundreds of identities and claiming more than $350,000 in false tax returns.

Authorities say thirty year-old Robert Brown used the identities of 332 taxpayers between January 2010 and March 2014 to collect refunds from the IRS. Several of the identities belong to residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Brown pleaded guilty in January to one count each of aggravated identity theft and wire fraud. He also has been ordered to pay $308,829 in restitution.

Authorities say Brown and another man filed returns online and received refunds through prepaid debit cards, U.S. Treasurer checks or electronic transfers to banks.

Co-defendant Lorenzo Brown is scheduled to be sentenced June 25.
