US Wants Illinois to Administer Statewide Science Tests

CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. Department of Education says Illinois has violated the law for failing to administer statewide science tests this school year.

The Chicago Tribune reports that in an April 20 letter to the Illinois State Board of Education, the Education Department says the board must come up with a plan and timeline by June 30 to become compliant and give the science assessments in 2015-16.

Federal law requires science testing during grades 3 through 5, 6 through 9, and 10 through 12.

Board spokeswoman Mary Fergus says the board is working on a plan to provide a science assessment in 2015-16.

The board officials say the agency planned to do some pilot testing of new science assessments this school year. The Education Department rejected the idea of pilot testing.
