Freeport Welcomes Visitors with Downtown Makeover

FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) — The spirit of the “Pretzel City” is alive with a downtown makeover Freeport that officials say will complement a new park which will be an intersection of several trails opening in June.

Tutty’s Crossing, renewed green space named for Freeport founder Tutty Baker, will celebrate a grand opening June 13. It will be a destination for events and festivals and the head of three hiking and biking trails.

Freeport Downtown Development Foundation is using $10,000 in donated funds to finance the improvements. They include bike racks shaped like pretzels, streetlight banners and shared bike lanes.

Foundation director Danielle Rogers says the improvements will be “a red carpet of sorts for folks coming off the trail to come into downtown.”

Pretzel-baking German immigrants gave the city its nickname.
