Moffitt Committee Passes Court Service Fee, “Relieved” By State Restoration Funds

Don MoffittThe move to increase court service fees, and the recent restoration of some state funds were highlights discussed by an area legislator yesterday.

State Representative Don Moffitt passed the service fee legislation out of committee yesterday. If the fee is supported by an acceptable cost study, fees which currently top out at $25 will increase in order to cover what the Sheriffs’ Association cites as ” the escalating costs of providing security to the court.”

The current maximum has reportedly been in place since 2003.

Meanwhile, Moffitt commented on the recent fund restoration to state service providers citing “relief.”

The Gilson Republican says “while we still face a serious budget crisis next year, it at least eases some of the pain for this year.”

The revenue boost provided funds back to a series of programs that saw funding cuts earlier this month. More than $26 Million in grants from the Department of Human Services and Public Health were assumed to had been suspended until the end of the fiscal year.

However, the Governors office reported higher tax revenue than expected. Programs such as autism services, as well as burial and funeral assistance will now see some state aid.
