On 150th Anniversary, Lincoln’s Hometown To Re-enact Funeral

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — History is on display this weekend in Springfield where crowds of people in period costume will re-enact Abraham Lincoln’s funeral.

The commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s burial will include a funeral procession, cannon salutes and encampments of Civil War re-enactors.

The detailed re-creation starts Saturday at Springfield’s Amtrak station, where a funeral train car accurate to the period will be on display with a replica of the coffin that carried Lincoln’s body from Washington to his hometown.

Several direct descendants of the original pallbearers will take part in the procession to the Old Capitol Plaza.

Sunday’s re-enacted funeral procession will follow the historic route to Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Local church services will feature Civil War-era music, and free exhibits will be open to the public throughout the weekend.
