Small Police Forces Look to Work Under Same Roof After Raid

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — A state commission that oversees the East St. Louis Police Department and three other small agencies wants to build a new headquarters for the departments as a possible precursor to a merger.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the Metro East Police District Commission has agreed to hire an architectural firm to design a building that could also house the Alorton, Brooklyn and Washington Park police forces. No state money is yet available for its construction.

The contract follows a March raid of Brooklyn police headquarters by Illinois State Police and St. Clair sheriff’s deputies.

St. Clair prosecutor Brendan Kelly has stopped taking cases from the municipal police force in the 700-person village.

Among the problems cited by Kelly were drugs and cash missing from the Brooklyn police evidence vault.
