Bustos Leads Women’s Economic Security Roundtable

CheriAn area politician visited Galesburg this morning to meet with women business owners from around the area.

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos kicked off a week long tour discussing women’s economic security. Closing the wage gap, supporting families on livable wages, and solidifying options for affordable child care were just a number of items discussed.

Various local owners spoke with Bustos about their personal struggles, triumphs, and thoughts on improving the current outlook on issues.

Hair Stylist Emily Robison was one of three entrepreneurial women to share her story. Robison says ensuring paid sick leave is an issue that resonates with her, as well as with her family and husband.

“I dont work, I don’t get paid,” says Robison. “So when the kids are sick, Tim is winding up having to take time off, and we’re hugely blessed that he has that though. He earns a ton of sick time and holidays and different things he can earn, but he earns them. That’s the biggest thing, I want them to be earned. I don’t expect a hand-out by any means, but it would be wonderful if I could earn a percentage of a sick hour to ‘x’ amount of hours worked.”

Bustos says she’ll continue to support legislation which allows workers to provide care to a sick family member or child.

The East Moline Democrat is expected to continue talks throughout Northwest and Central Illinois throughout the week.
