Chicago University Runner Up in Video Gaming Tournament

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago university that offered the nation’s first athletic scholarships for video gamers has fallen short of winning the North American college video gaming title.

The Chicago Tribune reports Robert Morris University came in as runner-up on Sunday in the North American Collegiate Championship in California. Robert Morris’s squad lost three games to none to the University of British Columbia in the multiplayer battle game “League of Legends.”

It was the first year the small private school participated in the tournament. Robert Morris recognizes video gaming as a varsity sport under its athletic department. Students practice in a $100,000 classroom and get scholarships for half off tuition and room and board.

Associate athletic director Kurt Melcher says the team is “motivated to work hard and come back next year.”
