Peters, Rosella (Rosie)

Peters, RosellaMrs. Rosella “Rosie” Peters, 96, of Galesburg, passed away at 1:05 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015 in Heartland Health Care Center. Members of her family surrounded the bed as she made her transition from earth to glory. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, brother, and husband, Louis Peters.

She was born August 31, 1918 in Chicago. She was the daughter of Joseph and Dora (McGill) Henderson and the sister of Naomi, Joseph, and Lillian. She, her great grandparents, grandparents, parents, and siblings lived on First Street in Galesburg for most of their lives. She joins all of them for a great celebration at the Big House on First Street in Heaven!

She was the loving mother and grandmother of one daughter, Naomi Law; one grandson, Anthony (and Christina) Law; and three great grandchildren, Kendall, DeAndre, and Faythe Law. She has one sister-in-law, Mary Henderson in Portland, Oregon. Juanita Mason and her children, Renee, Michael (and Jennifer), and Michelle were especially close and faithful to their “Aunt Rosie”. She leaves especially sweet memories of times shared with her sister/friends, Dorothy Howell, Rosanne McIlravy, and Cora Mae Page. She was blessed with many cherished friends throughout her life and she loved and was loved by every one of them.

In the 1950’s, Rosie was hired by Mr. Joseph Hecht at Ellis Jewelers.   She is still remembered for selling many Galesburg residents their first watch or special ring.

Rose became known as “Mother Peters” by her church family at Allen Chapel AME Church, her lifelong church. She had served as a member of the Floral Guild, Senior Choir, and Cecelia Malone Women’s Missionary Society. Later in life, she became a stewardess and assisted in serving communion.   She was the “youngest” member of the Young People’s Department of Allen Chapel. She loved God and she loved her church.

She was a member of the Good Will Singers and enjoyed singing at nursing homes, churches, and at Hill Prison. She is remembered as a loyal and welcome visitor and volunteer. She took great pleasure in making people laugh and would often break out in song and/or dance when visiting the sick and shut-in.

She was filled with the joy of the Lord. She always said, “I pray for everybody so then I won’t miss anybody”.   Her favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5 & 6 and her favorite “medicine” was vinegar and honey.

Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. A celebration of her life will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Tyson Parks III of Allen Chapel AME Church and Mr. Dave Scholl, Executive Director of the Galesburg Rescue Mission, officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Young People’s Department (YPD) of Allen Chapel AME Church or the Galesburg Rescue Mission.   Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
