Artistic Birds Pay Tribute to Military in Belleville

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A temporary artistic flight of fancy at Southwestern Illinois College pays tribute to nearby Scott Air Force Base.

The (Belleville) News-Democrat reports Massachusetts sculptor Dale Rogers’ display of nine stainless-steel birds is called “Flight.”

The birds, each weighs as much as 250 pounds,  hang 12 to 16 feet above ground in a line several yards long through the middle of campus.

The exhibit is in homage to the local military as organizers prepare the annual Art on the Square outdoor show in downtown Belleville for May 15th through 17th. The display was funded by “PNC Arts Alive,” a PNC Bank program.

Rogers says the birds have a “zigzag pattern” to give a “free-flowing appearance that the birds are coming by.”
