Central Illinois Village Worried About Diesel Fuel Spill

SIDNEY, Ill. (AP) — Officials in the central Illinois village of Sidney say they’re worried thousands of gallons of diesel fuel that spilled into a creek could threaten fish.

Sidney Village President Charles White tells the (Champaign) News-Gazette that he hasn’t seen any dead fish yet, but he’s concerned. Sidney Fire Chief Earl Bennett says about 2,000 gallons of fuel drained into the creek on Saturday morning from a train. He says there’s no effect on drinking water.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says a railroad contractor was in Sidney on Monday doing cleanup work. The state EPA says a containment boom will be in place for several weeks to skim fuel from the top of the water.

Sidney is a village of about 1,200 residents in Champaign County.
