City Council Approves Subdivision, Tables Community Center

1-20-15 Galesburg City CouncilThe Galesburg City Council approved giving $400,000 toward the building of a new 13- single family home and 13-town-home subdivision last night.

Alderman voted 7-0 on the proposal, which will support the building of public infrastructure and roads in relation to the new single-family housing set to be built on Lincoln Park Drive.

Local Businessman Mark Kleine is behind the investment. Kleine says the project would not be possible without the aid from the the city, and even with the funds he says his investment into the housing is still a “risk.”

Kleine tells WGIL that the reasoning behind building, is because the city badly needs new housing.

“Obviously we have housing in the area that people continue to buy, but unfortunately they don’t have a choice for new housing,or to have opportunities if they want to build a new house” says Kleine. This piece of property is very unique in that it’s in the middle of town and that it provides a number of resources you may not get on the outskirts of town.”

Mayor John Pritchard says the development will be the first new housing subdivision built in 18-20 years.

Meanwhile, council members once again tabled naming the boys and girls club the cities community center. There was no discussion. 7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin says he’d like to continue discussing the issue at the next council meeting.
