Knoxville City Council Reconsiders Request for a New Sign at the Fairgrounds

7-28-14 Knoxville City CouncilThe Knoxville City Council reconsidered the Knox County Fairgrounds request for a new sign last night.
The fairgrounds submitted a request a few months ago that was denied because the council thought they didn’t pay property taxes.

Knox County Fairgrounds Board Member Darcy Thorp attended the meeting to clarify that they do in fact pay taxes.

Thorp tells WGIL that there was confusion over the type of nonprofit organization the fairgrounds were and that it was clarified at the meeting.

“We are a not for profit, but we’re listed as a, it’s called a 501 (c)(5), you’ve probably heard of 501(c)(3) s that are a tax exempt not for profit,” says Thorp. “But with our’s it’s different because we were receiving state funds for agriculture and with that we would have to pay then, actually, county and city taxes.”

Thorp says they might try to work with the council on using the sign as the welcome sign for Knoxville.

The sign will be roughly 14 feet tall with a scrolling marquee.  The marquee will be used to highlight events in town as well as through the fairgrounds.

Thorp says this meeting was just a clarification and there will be another meeting to resubmit the proposal.
