Carl Sandburg College Professors Win Innovation of the Year Award

Carl Sandburg CollegeThe League of Innovations has recognized two faculty members at Carl Sandburg College for their innovative technique of teaching anatomy.

Associate Dean of Math and Natural Sciences Dave Burns and Assistant Biology Professor Marjorie Smolensky were the Innovation of the Year award winners.

Burns and Smolensky recieved the award for their “Anatomy Comes Alive Project.”

Smolensky tells WGIL that the project uses various forms of technology such as apps and smartboards to help students understand physiology and anatomy.

“What we’re trying to do is to introduce all sorts of innovative apps in technology that would be available to students to help them study some pretty difficult concepts–particularly in anatomy and physiology, ” says Smolensky. “We’re using a combination of smart boards, iPad apps, and 3-D animation that we can use in conjunction with Apple TV’s.”

This is the second year that Carl Sandburg College has been recognized with an Innovation of the Year winner.

Smolensky says many classrooms have already started using the technology, just not all used together like they have been.
