Central Congregational Church Celebrates Mary Ann Bickerdyke Day

Bickerdyke Day 2015

Volunteers at Central Congregational Church came together as civil war veterans for the celebration of Mary Ann Bickerdyke today.
Event Coordinator Gail Masinda tells WGIL that there will be a number of demonstrations tonight when events continue, such as bandage rolling and talks from a historic surgeon.

“We have demonstrations for bandage rolling, and tack,” says Masinda. “We have two ladies portraying mothers, and they are going to be reading letter from their sons who are in war. We also have another guy who is going to be a surgeon. He’ll talk about what that was like during the Civil War.”

State Representative Don Moffitt will be among the speakers at tonight’s event.

Moffitt says that the celebration of Bickerdyke is not only for her, but for all nurses to be recognized.

“This observance, and the fact that we had perhaps the greatest nurse in the Civil War who was from Galesburg helps draw importance to the profession,” says Moffitt.

Tonight’s events will be open to the general public at 6:30PM.
