Illinois Truck Crash Prompts Review of Federal Oversight

CHICAGO (AP) — A fatal truck crash in Illinois has prompted the U.S. Department of Transportation’s inspector general to examine the effectiveness of a federal safety oversight program.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin requested the audit of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration program after the January 2014 accident.

A fatigued truck driver crashed into emergency vehicles that were stopped for a disabled truck on Interstate 88 near Aurora. An Illinois Tollway worker was killed and a state trooper was injured.

The federal program is supposed to identify high-risk trucking operations and intervene. But a Chicago Tribune report found gaps, including that the agency ordered but never followed through on an investigation into the carrier involved in the crash.

The driver violated hours of service requirements and was sentenced to three years in prison.
