Food Hub in DeKalb County Would Help Farmers Connect

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — Organizers in DeKalb County are planning a packing and distribution center for fresh produce grown by local farmers. The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports the facility would be known as a “food hub,” and it would be the first in northern Illinois.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says such food hubs help small farmers connect with retailers and gain access to new markets.

DeKalb County Community Gardens Executive Director Dan Kenney says more research is needed to determine how many farmers would participate. Kenney says many local vegetable growers are interested.

Kenney says supporters include the city of DeKalb, DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation and the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University.

NIU students would do a feasibility study and create a business plan.
