Habitat For Humanity Nearing 50th Home

Knox County Habitat For HumanityKnox County Habitat For Humanity is on its way to its 50th home in the area.

The organization is currently in the process of finishing number 49–which will house residents on Ecklund Court in Galesburg once it’s completed. Executive Director Jordan Knight says the area will be the first neighborhood that Habitat has completed since it began back in 1993.

Knight tells WGIL that the organization is looking for family number 50.

“I would love it to happen this year before cold weather sets in again,” says Knight. “I know we’re not thinking about that now because everything just started getting nice outside. We’re searching for the right family. If you’re out there and you have that low earned income, you have a housing need, you have the ability to pay, man, give me a call, because we are in desperate search for that family.”

Knight says each home takes around four to seven months to build. He says that with each family, it’s personally a “blessing” to work with people who have a dream to one day own their own home.

Anywhere between 10 to 25 volunteers give their time every build day, depending on the day of the week and the people needed. The prospective home owners work along side habitat giving hundreds of hours as well. Knight says all sorts of skill sets work on the job.
