CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Teachers Union has filed an unfair labor practices complaint with the state labor relations board against the Chicago Board of Education.
The union is accusing the board of bad-faith bargaining and refusing to engage in mediation. The two sides are negotiating a new contract. Chicago Public Schools interim chief Jesse Ruiz says the district hasn’t had a chance to review the complaint but looks forward to continuing contract talks. The union’s contract expires June 30.
Teachers recently said the board wants them to pay the full amount of their pension contributions. They say that would amount to a 7 percent pay cut. The district says Chicago schools face a $1.1 billion deficit and a $700 million pension obligation this year.
