Illinois State Senior Gets Private Graduation Ceremony

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois State University senior who planned to miss commencement to help honor an in-law celebrating her own college graduation has received a private send-off from the school’s president.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports that ISU President Larry Dietz hosted Tom McDonald in his campus office Wednesday for a private commencement that will allow him to also honor his sister-in-law, an Iraq War veteran who is graduating Saturday from Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Both Dietz and McDonald dressed in academic regalia as the chancellor presented the departing student with a diploma cover like the one the finance major would have received at the Normal school’s graduation, which is also set for Saturday.

McDonald said his sister-in-law had to miss her high school graduation because of military training.
