Report: Reinstated Illinois Prison Official Getting Back Pay

CHICAGO (AP) — A former Chicago street gang member who was dismissed from a high-paying Illinois Department of Corrections job, but later reinstated, was awarded back pay.

Xadrian McCraven returned to his $111,432-a-year job as a senior policy adviser on Dec. 22 after an arbitrator ruled he was wrongly fired.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports  records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show state officials described McCraven’s conduct as “dishonest” and “deceitful.” But arbitrator David A. Dilts disagreed, ruling the state’s allegations were “without merit.”

After McCraven was reinstated, he was awarded back pay totaling $99,000, about $44,896 having been paid.

The Department of Children and Family Services fired McCraven in 2013 for “writing and responding to lewd and inappropriate emails” while at work. McCraven’s dismissal was reduced to a 10-day suspension and he was transferred to the Corrections Department.

McCraven wouldn’t comment on the Sun-Times story.
