Senate Passes Bill To Honor 7 Brothers, WWII Vets

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Senate has unanimously approved a measure that would name a section of a state highway after seven brothers who served in World War II.

Carlinville Republican Sen. Sam McCann’s bill would rename Route 67 through Greene County the “Powell Brothers Memorial Highway.”

Arthur, Earl, Fred, George and Max Powell served in the Navy. Adrian and Everett Powell served in the Army Air Corps. All seven brothers returned home after the war.

McCann says they “deserve to be remembered for their dedication to God and country.”

The brothers were commended by the U.S. Senate last year. The family’s hometown of Hillview erected a memorial flagpole in their honor in 1988.

McCann’s bill now heads to the Illinois House.
