congressional-artA Galesburg High School Student won the Annual Congressional Art Competition for the 17th Congressional District.Tiernan Smith’s art project, “American Robin” will hang in the Washington, D.C. Capitol Building for the next year.

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos says she has always enjoyed art since she was a little girl and that she thought Smith’s piece is “amazing”. Bustos tells WGIL that she particulary likes that the robin is surrounded by Cherry Blossoms, which have become a tourist attraction in Washington, D.C.

“And what I like especially about Tiernan’s piece is that you got your American robin and it’s surrounded by Cherry Blossoms,” says Bustos. “Out in Washington D.C., we have Cherry Blossoms that bloom every spring and it’s a major attraction for people coming to Washington D.C. from all over the world.”

Smith was one of 67 high school students who submitted artwork towards the Congressional Art Competition. Bustos says over three thousand people voted on the art pieces.

The 6 finalists will have their artwork hung in the Illinois and Washington offices of Congresswoman Bustos.

In addition to having his work hung in the capital, Smith will also receive two plane tickets to D.C. to see his art displayed.
