Springfield Officials To Hold Hearing On 1908 Artifacts

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — City officials in Springfield have planned a public meeting to hear comments about what should be done with remnants of a historic event unearthed during a rail project.

The (Springfield) State Journal Register reports that the meeting is Monday at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. Last week state lawmakers met to gather more information.

Artifacts related to the 1908 Springfield Race Riots were found in October during construction of a rail underpass. Since then, community organizations and lawmakers have called for more transparency on how the artifacts will be handled.

For now, excavation is on hold as authorities decide how to handle the site. The artifacts include the foundation of burned down homes.
