Arthur Looks Back on 34 Years as an Educator

boardpicThe outgoing superintendent in District 205 says he’s thankful for the people he has worked with during his time in the district.
Bart Arthur, who began as Galesburg’s Superintendent in 2012, will retire following the end of the school year.

Arthur has been in education for 34 years, with time spent as Principal at Churchill Junior High. He then became an administrator working with the district’s curriculum department.

Possibly the biggest issue to take place during Arthur’s tenure as Superintendent, was the Galesburg teachers strike that kept educators picketing for more than two weeks this past August. Arthur tells WGIL, that he wishes things could have been different, but that he still feels positive about his time in the position.

“Some of the things that happened are unfortunate,” says Arthur. “I wish that it would have been different because I really didn’t want my legacy to be the superintendent during a strike, but I understand that that’s the way life goes. I just feel fortunate that I got a chance to work for the district, the board has been tremendous to work with, and I hope that the teachers can forget about it and move forward and everybody can start a new start with Ralph Grimm.”

Arthur says he’s proud of many things the board has done such as the 1 to 1 computing initiative that was installed, and the Gale scholars program. Arthur plans to search for a teaching position at a college or university following his leave this July.
