Hammond Responds To Pension Reform Ruling

Norine HammondAn area representative has weighed in on the recent reversal of a bill passed by the Supreme Court, that cut Illinois pensions.

The ruling that cited the bill as unconstitutional was made Friday, striking down the law that had cut into government worker benefits in order to mend billions in state retirement debt.

State Representative Norine Hammond originally voted against the bill when it passed in December of 2013. The Macomb Republican who represents the 93rd district and Knox County says she had “Constitutional concerns over the bill, and now the court has at least made a ruling so legislators can get back to work rectifying the State’s financial situation.”

Hammond tells WGIL, that the problem still needs to be fixed.

“With the decision that was made by the Supreme Court, it puts SB-1 to bed if you will, but it doesn’t take the problem off the table,” says Hammond. ” The issue still exists, that we have an unfunded pension liability of somewhere in the neighborhood of $120 Million dollars. We are going to have to deal with it, and work out some kind of an agreement, and some kind of financial revenue stream.”

Hammond, as well as other state legislators, will now return to the drawing board, in order to deal with the state’s overall debt.

Hammond says she does not have a long term solution at this point.
