Illinois Soldiers To Serve With Polish Team in Afghanistan

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Five soldiers from the Army National Guard base in Springfield will deploy to Afghanistan as part of a specialized team that will train with Polish soldiers.

A deployment ceremony is scheduled for May 15 at Camp Lincoln.

Daniel Krumrei of Springfield is the Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard. He says the 20-year partnership with Poland is part of an effort to secure international relationships and to develop the military skills of National Guard soldiers.

The five are expected to train at Fort Bliss in Texas before heading overseas. Their mission allows National Guard soldiers to deploy side-by-side with counterparts from Poland.

Officials say soldiers from across the state were selected for the mission.

The team is expected to return to Illinois in spring 2016.
