O’Fallon’s Stone Veterans Memorial Found Shattered

O’FALLON, Ill. (AP) – Police in southern Illinois are investigating how a stone veteran’s memorial ended up knocked over and shattered.

Authorities say it happened Sunday night or early Monday at the O’Fallon City Veteran’s Monument. City employees found the two tablets damaged. Police are trying to find out if it was vandals or some sort of natural occurrence, like high winds.

O’Fallon Mayor Gary Graham says weather experts are examining the site and so are insurance examiners.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information. Officials say it will cost more than $10,000 to replace the tablets.

The damage comes just two weeks before the city’s annual Memorial Day celebration. But Graham says the city won’t cancel its plans. In fact he says “maybe more people will come because of this.”
