Elgin Seeks Grant To Buy Police Body Cameras

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Elgin police officials are applying for federal grant money to buy body cameras for its officers.

The (Elgin) Courier-News reports the city’s police department also has formed a committee to examine the use of the cameras.

Police departments across the country began taking a more serious looks at attaching body worn cameras to their officers following police shootings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and other communities.

Lawmakers in Illinois have proposed legislation that would regulate the use of body cameras by law enforcement.

Elgin’s 20-person committee will look at the feasibility of wearing the cameras and how to handle the logistics of storing videos or addressing FOIA requests for recordings.

Police in the west suburban community began testing body cameras last fall.
