Envoy on Islamic State to give Illinois commencement speech

CHICAGO (AP) — President Barack Obama’s special envoy in the fight against the Islamic State group will deliver the commencement address to a western Illinois college.

Monmouth College says Gen. John Allen will deliver the speech on Sunday.

Obama appointed the retired four-star Marine Corps general in September to help coordinate actions against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

Among the other high-profile positions during his military career, Allen served as commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. forces in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013.

Around 250 graduates are expected to attend the school’s 158th commencement ceremony. Monmouth College is a private school with an enrollment of around 1,300 students. It’s located in Monmouth, around 200 miles southwest of Chicago.
