Knox County Vets To Be Honored at Patriotic Day

PatrioticDayVeterans of Knox County will be honored this weekend.

The second annual Patriotic Day will take place Saturday–an event that is expected to be even bigger and better than last year.

That’s according to Coordinator Doug Olson, who says the National Guard’s 144th Ceremonial Army Band, a barbershop quartet, and a DJ will all be on hand for entertainment.

Speeches from area leaders and military personnel will also be on hand.

Olson tells the WGIL Morning News, that he expects even more veterans to be at the event this year, thanks to a new service.

“One of the things happening this year, is some of the nursing homes are providing transportation for veterans from their nursing homes,” says Olson. “It was kind of funny, one of the first questions many of the veterans asked was about free haircuts we’ll be providing, and if they have to register. No they don’t have to register for a free a cut, it’s just something everyone is looking forward to. It’s been a lot of help from the community to pull this all off.”

More than 350 veterans attended last year’s inaugural event, a number that’s expected to be even higher this year. Free food will be donated for the event. Festivities kick-off at 1:25 p.m.The event will take place at Grace Anglican Church.
