28th Annual Fishing Derby Lures in Young Fishers

Fishing_Derby_aThis Sunday marks the 28th annual Fishing Derby at Lincoln Park Lagoon.

The Kid’s Fishing Derby is a free event where families can gather to enjoy the outdoors and catch some fish.

Event Coordinator Al Hayden says the event is not a tournament, all you have to do is have fun and catch a fish. Hayden tells the WGIL Morning News that some kids try to compete with each other, but that is not what the event is about.

“Some folks say ‘I’m not gonna take my kid out there because you know, there’s too many kids’ or one reason or another, and I say ya know, you’re cheating your kid if you don’t because of when those kids get out there,” says Hayden. “This is a derby, okay? It’s not big fish, It’s not how many fish, It’s not biggest this or that. It’s just catch a fish.”

Instead of prizes for biggest fish or most fish caught, tables are set up for kids to get prizes just for catching one. Hayden says the prizes range from baseballs to dolls, so any kid can grab a prize they will enjoy.

The event is open from 1 to 3 p.m. for children ages 3 to 15.
