Judge Rejects Bid to Halt East St. Louis Landmark Demolition

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A St. Clair County judge has denied a request by the owner of a historic but deteriorating East St. Louis building for a temporary restraining order seeking to halt its demolition by the city.

Circuit Judge Robert LeChien (La-SHEEN) on Thursday rejected Kimberly Williams’ last-ditch effort to salvage the 106-year-old Murphy Building in downtown East St. Louis.

The judge ruled the city had obtained a valid court order in January authorizing the building’s removal. Williams had argued that she wasn’t properly notified.

East St. Louis officials call the property an eyesore and safety hazard and say they have tried to work unsuccessfully with Williams for years.

The crumbling landmark is ranked by historic preservationists as among Illinois’ most endangered.
