Lewis, Sidney “Sid” R.

Lewis, Sid PhotoSidney R. “Sid” Lewis, 70 of Abingdon, was called to be with his Heavenly Father at 12:16 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015.  He passed away unexpectedly at his home.

He was born May 31, 1944, in Avon, the son of Stanley R. and Marian (Foster) Lewis.  He married Carol A. Williams on November 2, 1963 at the Abingdon Christian Church.  She survives.

Sid is also survived by one son, Scott R. (Mary Beth) Lewis of Galesburg; one daughter Nicki (Danny) Stranger of Abingdon; six grandchildren, Ali Stranger, Lindsey Stranger, Abby Stranger, Kelsey Lewis, Josh Alvarado and Mikayla Lewis; one great-granddaughter, Kenzie Voorhees; nieces, nephews and several cousins, including Carol Lewis Roberts of Galesburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Kimberly S. Lewis, and his brother, John E. Lewis.

He lived in Abingdon most of his life.  He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1962 where he enjoyed playing trumpet in the marching band.  Following high school, he spent 10 years as a Prudential Insurance Agent and earned LUTC and CLU certifications.  During this time he acquired many lifelong friends who still recall fond memories of “Sid the Prudential Man.”  Later, he bought and operated his own semi and hauled livestock. He worked for several area trucking companies and retired from Gates Rubber Company in 2009 after 20 years.

He was baptized in the Abingdon Congregational Church as an infant. He was later baptized with his wife, Carol, in the Abingdon Christian Church after accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

He was a lifelong member of Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185.  His hobbies included motorcycle riding, riding horses, and he was a past member of the Spoon River Trail Riders.  He also enjoyed fishing and boating with his family.  He spent countless hours spoiling his grandchildren and great-granddaughter who were the apples of his eye. His bellowing laugh will be missed most by his loving family.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Hinchliff- Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.  Scott Cramer and Bob Malone will officiate.  Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel with Masonic Services at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
