Rauner says No ‘Clear Roadmap’ on Pension Reform

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner says there’s no “clear roadmap” for a solution to the state’s pension crisis after the Illinois Supreme Court struck down 2013 overhaul legislation last week.

The Republican governor wants to allow state workers and retirees to keep already earned benefits but move them to a less-generous plan going forward that he says would save the state $2.2 billion next year. But Rauner told reporters Thursday that there are now “concerns” whether his ideas will work.

Rauner’s administration had defended the plan as constitutional before a House panel Wednesday afternoon, the same day Rauner privately met with Senate President John Cullerton about pension proposals.

Rauner says he’s “feverishly endeavoring” to come up with a solution “that we have a high confidence level will pass constitutional muster.”
