College of DuPage Faces Further Review of Spending

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (AP) — A troubled community college in suburban Chicago faces further scrutiny for its spending following decisions by the state and the accreditation agency that oversees the school.

The Illinois House on Thursday unanimously approved a wide-ranging audit conducted by the state’s top auditor for College of DuPage. News of the state’s audit came shortly after the Glen Ellyn school released a letter from the Higher Learning Commission informing administrators that it has opened a review.

The commission said it plans to hold off on reaffirming the college’s accreditation until it evaluates the school’s finances and potential ethics violations.

The school has faced criticism over a $763,000 severance package to end president Robert Breuder’s contract three years early.

The college also is being investigated by DuPage County prosecutors and state education officials.
