Loaded 9 mm Smith & Wesson Found in Carry-On Bag at Midway

CHICAGO (AP) — Security screeners at Chicago’s Midway airport have discovered a loaded 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun in a passenger’s carry-on luggage.

The Transportation Security Administration says the firearm was discovered Thursday. The 43-year-old passenger was planning to fly from Chicago to Las Vegas. The agency said in a statement that the man was arrested on a local charge.

It was the eighth firearm discovered this year in carry-on luggage at Midway. Nationwide, TSA screeners found more than 2,200 firearms last year.

The maximum civil penalty for a single violation is $7,000.

Firearms are prohibited in carry-on luggage, but can be transported in checked bags if they are unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline.
