Burgland Drugstore To Close After More Than 25 Years

burgland“The end of an era is coming.” That’s according to George Burgland who told WGIL this morning that after more than 25 years of serving the Galesburg area, his business, Burgland Drugs will close its doors May 27th.

Burgland says the business files will reportedly be sold to Hy-Vee, effective May 28th. Negotiations have been in the works for the past couple of weeks.

However, the building itself will still remain under the ownership of the Burgland family, with plans to lease out the space to another business.

Burgland says he will continue to work part time for Hy-Vee, once the clientele switches over next week. His 20 employees will also be hired on. Burgland tells WGIL, that the sale was essentially based on financial shortcomings.

“The state of the business now is such, that the margins are shrinking, and the Pharmacy Benefit Managers are squeezing the little guys out,” says Burgland. “That’s kind of how I feel–like I’m being squeezed out. My customers–I’ve always appreciated their patronage, I’ve always had great employees–I really do this with a heavy heart, but, it is the right thing for me to do right now.”

According to Burgland’s web site, the drug store has officially been open since 1986. Burgland says closing his doors will end nearly 150 years of what he calls “the local Burgland retail endeavor.”
