Recent Fatalities Remind Drivers to be More Cautious on the Roads

IDOT LogoIn light of recent fatalities on Interstate 74 and Route 41 near Galesburg, it is important to remember how to drive safely for yourself and other drivers.

Galesburg Police Captain Rodney Riggs says to always watch your speed and do not use your phone unless you have a hands-free device.

Captain Riggs tells WGIL that being aware of what’s around you is most important.

“What I would say is to always be aware of your surroundings, always be aware of your speed,” says Riggs. “Defensive driving is paramount in regard to watching your speed and watching out for other drivers.”

Captain Riggs says it is important to always obey construction zone speed limits, regardless of whether there are workers out there or not.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says to be cautious of following too close as well.

One of the most common crashes in work zones are rear-ending.

Keep out of the blind spots for big vehicles like semi-trucks, who may not be able to see you when they change lanes or may not be able to slow down as fast.

IDOT says the reduced speeds are put in place usually because of changed road conditions, such as narrow lanes or edge drop-offs.

There is a zero tolerance policy to violations in construction zones and the fines have increased.
