Southern Illinois City Brings Aboard 1st Police Dog

TROY, Ill. (AP) — A small southern Illinois city has its first police dog, a 17-month-old German shepherd that understands only Dutch.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports the Troy Police Department is launching its K-9 program by bringing aboard a drug-detecting dog named Zak. He hails from the Netherlands and responds to commands in Dutch.

Starting the program cost $12,000, and Troy Police Chief Brad Parsons says more than $8,500 was raised through donations. The program is also meant to help out other cities that don’t have police dogs, including Edwardsville, Highland, Glen Carbon and Maryville.

Police say Zak recently had his first search, finding cannabis pipes in a car at Alton High School. He’s living with his new partner, Officer Ryan Meier.
