Ex-Church Deacon Sentenced Impregnating Mentally Ill Teen

KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) — A former Kankakee church deacon has been sentenced to seven years in prison for impregnating an 18-year-old mentally disabled woman.

Angelo T. Ervin was sentenced by Kankakee County Circuit Judge Kathy Bradshaw Elliott.

The 51-year-old Ervin was arrested in August 2010 after the victim told her parents who got her pregnant. Her daughter was born in January 2011 and is now 4.

Under Illinois law, it is illegal to have sex with a mentally disabled person who is unable to understand or give consent to it.

A jury found Ervin guilty on March 13.

During Friday’s hearing, Elliott said she would have handed Ervin a longer sentence had he not shown remorse.
Assistant State’s Attorney Brenda Claudio asked the judge for a 20-year sentence because the victim was mentally disabled.
