Knoxville City Council Discusses Fairgrounds Grant Eligibility

7-28-14 Knoxville City CouncilAt last night’s Knoxville City Council meeting, many members discussed the eligibility of the Knox County Fairgrounds for TIF funding.

Second Ward Alderman Dennis Maurer brought up that the Fairgrounds have not yet resubmitted their proposal for the new sign.

They were previously denied under confusion about their status as a non-profit organization and if they paid taxes.

It was clarified at the last meeting that they did pay property taxes, which would make them eligible for TIF funding.

Maurer tells WGIL that it might be the reconstruction of the sign that would make them ineligible.

“To my understanding, they do pay property taxes,” says Maurer. “Where they want to place the sign is in the city’s TIF district. It has more to do with the fact that it is new construction, and is not something they are re-using or renovating. They are replacing it outright to start something totally new.”

The council has set aside any decisions until they hear back from the Knox County Fairgrounds about resubmitting their proposal.
