Operations Begin at Power Plant in Northern Illinois

NELSON, Ill. (AP) — A natural gas-fired power generation plant has started commercial operations in the northern Illinois community of Nelson.

Invenergy said Monday that engineers last week completed performance testing on the 600-megawatt plant, which is located on land the company purchased nine years ago in Lee County. The combined-cycle plant that sits on 165 acres uses two gas turbines and two steam turbines.

The (Sterling) Daily Gazette reports Invenergy initially planned to use ethanol and natural gas to generate electrical power at the plant. But the ethanol portion of the project was scrapped, reducing estimated job creation from 70 positions to about 25 new jobs.

The Chicago-based company said Monday that two dozen full-time workers are now at the plant in Nelson.
