Congresswoman Bustos Fights for Veterans in House of Representatives

veteransWith memorial day coming up, the U.S. House of Representatives are focusing in on veterans.

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos was a sponsor for the Veteran’s ID Card Act. The act passed through the House this week.

That’s according to Congresswoman Bustos who says currently those veterans who don’t qualify have to use discharge papers to show proof of service. Bustos tells WGIL that these papers leave veterans vulnerable to theft, since very personal information is on them.

“It has a lot of information on it, personally sensitive information, including social security numbers, service details, and it really puts our veterans at needless risk of identity theft,” says Bustos. “We don’t want them carrying that around, it’s too much information in there, so what this new Veteran’s ID Card will be is just, essentially like a drivers license, about the same size. They’ll be able to show that in an instance, just pull it out of their wallet or out of their purses and show that ‘hey, I served’.”

The act would allow veterans access to the ID cards even if they have not served at least 20 years or received medical care from the Veterans Affairs.

Congresswoman Bustos also introduced an act today that would create a commemorative coin to honor Hero Street USA.
