John, DonaldDonald L. John, 83, of Galesburg, Illinois, died at 9:08 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at home.

He was born November 20, 1931 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of William and Claudia (Tracey) John. He married Una Denney on February 28, 1961 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death October 11, 1994.

He is survived by two grandsons, Ronald John and Jerry Sorenson, both of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; a brother, Floyd John of Burlington; many loving nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Buddy. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, William John Sr., Leonard John, Harold John, Claude John, and Paul John; and two sisters, Wanda Richter and Louise Jones.

Don worked in the meat department at Benner Tea in Burlington for 10 years and then for Braniff Airlines in Chicago. He moved to Galesburg in 1957 and worked in the meat department at A & P Grocery Store for 27 years. Finally, he worked as a custodian for Galesburg School District 205 for 12 years before retiring in 1994.

Don graduated from Burlington High School in 1950. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954.   Don was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the chapel. Pastor Raymond Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Oquawka Cemetery, followed by a luncheon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
