Illinois Man Arrested Again For Stealing Socks

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A 43-year-old Belleville man imprisoned multiple times for stealing socks has been arrested again on the same charge.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that James M. Dowdy was charged with burglary Tuesday after police used a bait car, surveillance camera and a basket of laundry to build a case against him.

Dowdy is on parole after receiving a 12-year prison sentence and pleading guilty to walking into a woman’s home and taking her socks in 2008. He served six years in prison for a previous sock-related burglary and received a 3-year prison sentence in 1993 for attempted burglary after police caught him with a bag of stolen socks.

Dowdy remained in the St. Clair County Jail on a $300,000 bond. Online court records don’t list an attorney on his behalf.
