Local Kids Gear Up for 7th Annual Memorial Day Bike Ride

Elaborately decorated bicycles will ride the streets in honor of veterans for the 7th Annual Memorial Day Bike Ride.

Kids can gather around 8 a.m.  Monday Morning at the Old Knox County Courthouse in Knoxville.

The parade of bikes will be led by a car of three veterans.

Coordinator Vicky Schultz says the first year started with only three bikes, but has evolved more and more, with over 30 bikes present last year.

Schultz tells the WGIL Evening News that her husband and her started the event after seeing a decline in attendance at the veterans day ceremonies.

“My husband and I have participated in the ceremony on Veterans Day and had watched it decline as far as people participating–especially kids,” says Schultz. “We decided that maybe a parade was something we could begin.”

This year there will be four prizes available to win.

Following the bike ride will be a memorial day ceremony at the cemetary, where they will teach the kids about what memorial day represents.

The event is free to kids, the only cost is in decorating your bicycle.
