Police Investigating Vandalism Of U of Illinois’ Alma Mater

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — Police at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign say they’re investigating after someone sprayed either paint or chalk on the campus’ Alma Mater statue.

Police spokesman Pat Wade tell the (Champaign) News-Gazette that they received a report Monday afternoon that someone sprayed the front and marble base of the statue. Police then checked surveillance video and found a group of people around the statue at about 2:25 a.m. Monday. Wade says it appears one person is largely responsible for the damage.

Wade says campus workers were able to clean most of the substance,  either paint of chalk,  off of the statue.

The Alma Mater statue recently underwent a $360,000 renovation.

Campus police are asking anyone with information to come forward. Crimestoppers is offering a reward.
