Champaign Leads Illinois Cities in 5-Year Growth

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Recent figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that no city in Illinois with 50,000 or more people has grown as fast the past few years as Champaign.

The eastern Illinois city that is home to about half of the University of Illinois’ flagship campus grew 4.2 percent since April 2010. That give sit a population of 84,513 people.

As The News-Gazette in Champaign notes though, nationally 314 U.S. cities grew at faster rates over that period.

Another nearby city was among the leaders in population loss over that period.

Decatur’s population fell by 2,116 over the past five years to 74,010. Only six U.S. cities have seen their populations drop by more people.
